Without it, this band Justin would be nothing. This one to that wonderful instrument of only 6 strings…the guitar. Then the band ends the album with another homage. The chorus ramps it up and squeezes its fingers around you neck. The band displays their tougher side and yet keeps the humor that they are drenched in. When the songs are this good, it doesn’t matter if it is another ballad type song. “In Another Life” is another rocking power ballad and you know what, I don’t care. The time changes and style changes keep the song interesting and it is never a dull moment. Hell, she is so metal she could rust and she is so happy and when she is cutting meat. “Heavy Metal Lover” is about, well, his lover who happens to be a Heavy Metal fan. A journey worth taking.Īnd then back to the power ballad and this one is more humor and utter enjoyment. It is both grandiose and bombastic as well as calm and serene.

The falsettos he hits are high enough to shatter glasses and windows all over the world. The band opens with what I think is a contender for song of the year, “Rock And Roll Deserves to Die” It has a grand epic feel to it and Justin Hawkins delivers a commanding vocal performance. The ingredients of which are a dash of the flamboyance of Glam Rock sprinkled with hints of 80’s Hair Bands and a splash of heavy metal all mixed together with a sense of humor that is purely tongue fully implanted in cheek. The album harkens back to the early days of the band I enjoyed so much. Yes, I listened their releases after that, but nothing has grabbed my attention as their first two releases. I haven’t had much interest in the band since their debut ‘Permission to Land’ in 2003 and its follow-up ‘One Way Ticket to Hell…And Back’ in 2005. It is their 6th overall album and third in just 4 years. Somebody said that wallpaper on the cover is probably the most famous wallpaper in the world. The Darkness return with ‘Easter is Cancelled’. We went back to that neighborhood a few years ago for the Darkness documentary The Promise, and we asked the owners if the wallpaper was still up and they said no. When we listed it, the realty company wrote, "This was the Springsteen house" or "Springsteen stopped by here." Pitchfork: I assume you don't live in that same house where you took the shot now.įS: The house has been sold. But the idea of this color photograph that could have been a snapshot in somebody's drawer worked for the album.

There were a lot of black and white photographs taken in those sessions too which were very striking in their own right. But we were trying to get something to look like an old Kodacolor snapshot. The idea was that these people transcended time or space. It could have been done in the 70s or 50s or even the 40s. Pitchfork: I think part of the reason this cover stands out is because it looks like an amateur photo.įS: We were trying to recreate these middle America, working class families guys that were looking for redemption. I'd give him a little direction and he gave me a lot back. He threw himself into the graphic aspect of the album. I didn't know if he was going to pick any of them. That's the person that is the Darkness on the Edge of Town character and that's what I want on my cover." Apparently, my photographs helped him find the characters he was writing about in the songs.įS: Well, I kind of liked it, but there were so many images that I didn't know what he was going to do. Pitchfork: On the cover of his previous album, Born to Run, he's grinning really intensely, but this one is a lot more serious.įS: From what I understand, when he looked at the photograph he said, "That's the person that I'm writing about. So the original shoot was just done with my perception of how I thought he wanted to look or how I wanted him to look.

I actually didn't hear it until several weeks later. I knew what his past music sounded like but I had no idea what intention he had for Darkness on the Edge of Town. Pitchfork: Did you talk to Bruce about the mood of the music on Darkness or what he was going for before the shoot?įS: Absolutely not. And then we did quite a few weeks of shoots afterward, but it turned out the cover was from that very first test shoot. FS: When we first started shooting in my home in Haddonfield, New Jersey, we just did some test shoots in locations around the house.
